このレッスンでは、友人から悪い知らせを聞いた時に何と言うのか学びます。最近私の友達が葬儀に出席してきたと言っていました。彼の友達は突然亡くなりました。まだ37歳でした。友達からそれを知らされたとき、自然と衝撃を受けました。

このような状況で何を言うのかとても難しいです。慰めの言葉を申し出るのはいつも簡単に出来る事ではありませんよね。

Sorry to hear that の意味

このような表現が使えます。”Sorry to hear that.”　意味は「残念でしたね」　「残念に思います」　「お悔やみ申し上げます」

My friend let me know about the bad news by text. My reply was 「Really sorry to hear this news mate. We better catch up.」

私の友人はその悪い知らせを文章で知らせてくれました。私の返事は「それを聞いてとても残念に思うよ。また会おうよ。」

“Really sorry to hear this news mate” is just a way to express sadness and show that you care. My friend wanted me to know, probably because he wanted to be comforted and share his loss. By saying “Sorry to hear this news” I am offering comfort.

「その知らせを聞いてとても残念に思う」とは、悲しみと相手を気にかけている事を表す表現です。私の友人は私に知って欲しかったということは、慰めてほしかったり、喪失感を共有したかったのだと思います。私は「残念に思う」と言う事で、慰めていたのです。
“We better catch up” is an indirect way for me to offer to be there for him and that I intend to see him soon.

「We better catch up」（また会おう）は、彼のそばに居る、彼の味方だという事を伝える、私にとっての間接的な方法であり、いつか会おうとも思っているということです。

Special note: By saying “sorry” you are not taking the blame for what has happened, you are offering comfort and expressing you care.

「Sorry」（ごめんなさい）と言う事によって、あなたは起きた事に謝っているわけではありません。慰めと気にかけていることを表しているだけです。
