日本人がよく忘れる所有格”My”

A few days ago, I went to my regular Japanese and English language exchange meet up. At this meet up I always speak English because I like to discover  mistakes Japanese English speakers make. On this night, I noticed two Japanese make the same mistake – dropping the possessive determiner “my”.

数日前、英語と日本語の交流サークルに行ってきました。このサークルでは、いつも私は英語を話します。何故なら、私は日本人の英語の間違いを発見するのが好きだからです。その夜、私は二人の日本人が同じ間違いをしている事に気づきました。それは、所有格の「ｍｙ」が抜けていることです。

例文：

１．父はトヨタで働いています。母は専業主婦です。

誤:  Father works for Toyota. Mother is a house wife.

正:　My father works for Toyota. My mother is a house wife.

 

２．友達と家をシェアしていますが、自分の部屋はあります。

誤 2:　I share a house with some friends, but I have own room.

正 2:　I share a house with some friends, but I have my own room.

 

If we look at these sentences in Japanese, we can understand why Japanese make the mistake of dropping “my”

日本語でこの文章を見れば、日本人がなぜmyを抜いてしまうのか理解できます。

Japanese drop “my”, or forget to use “my”, when speaking English because in Japanese what is understood is not said, but inferred.

日本人が「私のお父さん」とか　「私の車」とはあまり言わないですよね。しかし、英語では「私のお父さん」とか「私の車」を必ず言わなければいけません。

外国人にとって「My」を抜くのはかなり簡単な間違いに思えます。「なぜそんな簡単な間違いをするのか」とよく思われます。

The best way for you to solve this problem is to remind yourself to use complete sentences. This is one of the cultural differences of Japanese and English that causes problems.  Japanese often speak in verbs dropping the subject and object when it is understood, while native Englsih speakers more often and not use complete sentences.

この問題を解決する最も良い方法は、文章全部を省略せずに話すことです。これは、日本語と英語の違いが引き起こす問題の一つです。日本語はよく相手が理解している場合は主語を省いて動詞や目的語から話すことがよくあります。英語のネイティブスピーカーも英語の文章全部を使わず省略することも多いですが。

 

My is a Possessive determiner  – which modifies a noun by attributing possession  (or other sense of belonging) to someone or something.

Myは所有格　－　人または物に対して所有・所属関係などを表す名詞・代名詞などの格

Get into the habit of using “my”.
