プレゼントは英語？ジャパニーズイングリッシュ？

Hello my students,

多くの日本人は　「プレゼント」Present　の使い方を間違っています。
贈り物としての「プレゼント」は名詞としてのみ使われますが、間違って動詞として使っている人が非常に多いですね。

動詞としての「プレゼント Present」は違う意味として使います。

「プレゼンテーションをする」という、商品や人を紹介する意味や、
オリンピックなどで「賞を授与する」という意味として使います。
誕生日やクリスマスなどで「贈り物をする」という意味としては使えません。

贈り物をすると言う意味の動詞は「与える」や「あげる」の意味もある

それでは、英語の説明を読んでみましょう。

I was teaching a class this morning about birthdays. One of my students said the following.

“I present my mother some flowers.” WRONG　誤

A lot of Japanese people make this mistake. Why is this wrong?

The answer is simply. Students think “present” can be used as a (past tense) verb to mean “give”.

I gave my mother some flowers. RIGHT　正

When we are talking about Xmas or birthdays “present” is a noun.

I got two presents for my birthday.

Are you buying your mother a Xmas present?

Never replace give with present.

You cannot present a gift to anyone. You can only give a gift to someone.

The verb present means to give or award something, especially formally or ceremonially Example:He presented them with gold medals.

The verb present means to introduce (a person or product), especially formally:

I would like to present our new product, the Sony Podbuster

プレゼントはジャパニーズイングリッシュではないのはわかりましたか。ただし、動詞として使う場合はジャパニーズイングリッシュですね。
